How is this measured?

Every figure comes from the reviews on Viator and Tripadvisor, added together per tour. That combined total is the number the booking page itself shows.

The five-star share is the part of a tour's reviews that give five stars. We use it rather than the average because an average hides the spread: 4.6 made of steady fours is a different trip from 4.6 that is mostly fives with a few furious ones.

A tour is counted once it has 25 or more reviews, and it can appear in a top three once it has 100 or more. Ties go to the tour with more reviews. Prices are the Viator "from" price in US dollars, so the cheapest option on the listing. Minimum ages are read from each operator's own listing, and counted only where we could read one reliably.

Categories follow the activity type on each listing. Tours that fit none of the six named categories, such as island bus tours, submarines and hikes, sit under "everything else".

We refresh ratings and prices every week. We don't measure how many people book a tour, and we don't read or score the text of the reviews.
